Been reading up on the city so I thought I'd list some things about this place that people may or may not know.
The name Chicago comes from the Indian word Checagou which mean "wild onion" or "garlic" It has 2.9 million people, which makes it the third largest and third most populous city in the United States, as well as one of the ten most influential cities of the world.
Camp Douglas, a Civil War Prison camp was located near Lake Michigan on the site of what is now condominiums near the University of Illinois.Babe Ruth's "Called shot" in which he pointed at the bleachers before hitting a home run during the 1932 World Series, took place at Wrigley Field, home of the Cubs. Famous people born in Chicago include Hillary Rodham Clinton, R. Kelly, Michael Clark Duncan, Walt Disney, Jack Ruby, Harrison Ford, Hugh Hefner, Raymond Chandler, Michael Mann, Jenny McCarthy, John C. Reilly, Shel Silverstein, Betty Ford, Robin Williams, Edgar Rice Burroughs and Mr. T. The Sears Tower, the tallest building in North America, has 3,720,000 sq.ft. of office space, 110 floors and a view of more than 35 miles. The Chicago Fire began on October 8th, 1871 at 137 DeKoven Street. The Fire Department was directed to the wrong neighborhood, allowing the fire to spread. The fire lasted two days, until rain on the 10th helped put the fire out. More than 300 people died and 100,000 homeless. The fire caused $200 million dollars worth of damage. Following the fire, the city was rebuilt on the sensible grid pattern we know today. Notable Chicago criminals include John Dillinger, Richard Speck, John Wayne Gacy, H H Holmes, Larry Hoover and Al Capone.
Chicago musicians include The Smashing Pumpkins, Wilco, Filter, Veruca Salt, Shellac, Buddy Guy, Mest, Disturbed, Ministry, Screeching Weasel, Fall Out Boy, E'Nuff Z'Nuff, Styx and Wesley Willis.
Backdraft, The Fugitive, The Blues Brothers, Home Alone, Ferris Bueller's Day Off, Judgement Night, When Harry Met Sally, The Untouchables and Risky Business were all filmed in and take place in Chicago.
The Gangster Disciples, one of the nation's largest gangs, was created in Chicago.
